About this cultivar:

Sanguisorba officinalis 'Red Thunder' is derived from a Korean collection of Sanguisorba officinalis. This high-fashion Sanguisorba was selected by Dutch plantsman Piet Oudolf for its deep ruby-red bobbles, perched on tall stiffer stems. Whether in the border or a meadow planting, a bouquet or frost-covered in the garden’s winter light, their distinctive silhouette inspires as much drama as a gathering thunderhead. A bluish green bed of pinnate foliage with toothed leaflets launches a strong floral display.

    About this genus:

Sanguisorba is a genus of flowering plants in the rose family (Rosaceae) native to the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. The common name is burnet.

A profusion of dense and oblong, catkin-like blooms sway above decorative pinnate foliage, generating interest for months - the seed heads look great for months after they die and dry out. Happiest in a sunny to part-shade spot where the soil stays moist, put them where the catch the morning or evening sun for best effect
